Brain chemicals are made from amino acids and amino acids come from protein. Eating enough protein for your body weight is the crucial first step.
Avoiding sugar, caffeine, processed and chemical-laden foods is another.
Herbs and supplements include SAM-e, Saint John’s Wort, Valerian, kava-kava, and 5HTP

Tea made from mint, chamomile valerian is very soothing. Getting enough sleep really should be the priority. Avoid sugar, caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol. Whole grain products, especially brown rice, dark green veggies, citrus fruits and organic meats will help. Basically the least processed the better. Buy food that is by itself, then prepare at home. Or another guide is not to buy anything that has more than five ingredients in it. AND AVOID MSG, aspartame and margarine like the plague.

Taking St. John’s Wort can be dangerous if you plan on going out in the sun for any length of time.

For depression and anxiety, a good quality vitamin B complex is all you need.
