Are prenatal vitamins and DHA supplements good for a breastfeeding mom?
August 25th, 2009 | by Vitamin Advisor |sweetienat123 asked:
I still have several months to go before my due date, but I am wondering if any moms out there took/take prenatal vitamins and/or DHA supplements while breastfeeding. I take them now, and am curious to know if I am supposed to continue them while breastfeeding.
Thank you in advance for any helpful answers.

I was told to continue prenatal vitamins for a year if breastfeeding (or longer if I continued to breastfeed) or atleast 3 months if I decided not to breastfeed to rebuild my body. Also I was told to continue the vitamins if I planned on trying for another baby as that would allow vitamins to build up for another baby (allow it is recommended to wait 12-18 months between pregnancies).

Go for it.
DHA supplementation increases the plasma and breast-milk DHA concentrations of lactating women, resulting in higher PP DHA concentrations in infants.
This finding suggests a cause-and-effect relationship between infant milk DHA intake and visual acuity. If these data are confirmed, there is a need to consider the optimal intake of DHA for the lactating mother.

The results of this study indicated that relatively low intakes of dietary DHA significantly elevated milk DHA content. This would clearly elevate the infant’s DHA intake and might have implications for brain and retinal development.
Your best bet is still eating well, but.

I breastfeed my son exclusively, and I take pre-natals and Expecta! (my OB and the pharmacist said its a good idea to take both!) it’s good for eye and brain development!
good luck! God bless!
