Is it necessary to give my baby vitamins if I take prenatals while breastfeeding?

I breastfeed and I take a prenatal that has everything in it, including vitamin D. I also take an extra chewable calcium supplement. Is it necessary for me to give him extra vitamins?
I also take my son outside in the sun for a few minutes a few times a week to get the vitamin D from the sun.

I never gave my daughter vitamins and I breastfed and took prenatal vitamins throughout the breastfeeding. My doctor never even mentioned giving her vitamins. ****** milk is great for the baby. He shouldn’t need anything extra. But I would check with his pediatrician just to be sure.

You need to supplement your baby with Vitamin D while breastfeeding. It does not get passed through efficiently.

No vitamins. He is getting all the nutrients he needs from you.
By the way, whether or not you take your vitamins, he still gets what he needs…YOU do not get what you need…so good for you for taking the prenatal!!
My Ped told me not to supplement my son with vitamin D…we live in Southern Cal…. enough sunshine… and they only need a few minutes of exposure to get the Vitamin D they need! :)

Your baby shouldn’t need anything but what your body provides.

The one situation where I would give a suplement to a breastfeed newborn was if mom and baby were not getting any sunlight or other sorce of vit D. If you both spend all your time inside AND you are getting vit D form any other sorce (fish, suplements ect) then i would give some to the baby but not otherwise.

Apparently, where you live plays a factor in how much sun the baby needs. I gave my son Polyvisol everyday until he started eating baby foods, now at almost 9mo he gets his vitamins every couple of days. We live in the midwest. he loves the outdoors and does spend time everyday outside. I figured, better to be safe.

I am breastfeeding a 14 month old- and no, she doesn’t take vitamins. She eats a balanced diet, she sleeps really well- despite cutting molars, and she nurses 4 times a day. So, I don’t worry about it. I take a multivitamin each day.
