How important are prenatal vitamins for a baby?
July 15th, 2009 | by Vitamin Advisor |Nella asked:
I was just wondering because I haven’t been to the doctor since I found out I was pregnant. I’ve been eating healthy and trying to stay away from junk food except for when I have cravings. I haven’t been to the doctor because I haven’t told my parents because they are extremely strict(I’m 19 years old). So, how important are those vitamins?

they are important, but you don’t have to them. just eat healthy and drink fruit juices until you can go to the doctor and then ask if you still need to take them.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Take them ritualistically!!!
And congrats on your pregnancy. You’re very young, but at least your parents sound supportive.
That’s a blessing!

I think I understand your question now. You can take drugstore brand vitamins. Look in the vitamin section and look for Prenatal Vitamins… the clerk can help you out if you can’t find them. I took drugstore vitamins and wasn’t prescribed vitamins. They’re the same thing. My daughter was born 7 lbs 11 oz and extremely healthy. At six months she’s almost 20 pounds and growing rapidly. Prenatals have things like folic acid and lots of iron—both things not found in Flintstones vitamins, but unfortunately the iron in Prenatals can make you nauseous, so that’s where the Flintstones come in. You can take those until your nausea begins to stop, then restart the regular Prenatals.

I took a Flintstones vitamin everyday and had two healthy 6 pound twins. Pre natal vitamins made me sick so I took the Flintstones, and they worked fine.

You can get them from Walmart…..But you really need to tell your parents because you need the prenatal care of an OB. What are they going to do….spank you? Grow up and be a woman about it. They will probably be disappointed at first, but they will eventually get over it and be great grandparents.

I know they are important, however I was one that couldn’t take them at all. My drs told me to take FLINSTONES and I did, 2 of my other friends living in different areas have been told the same things. So since you haven’t told ya parents yet just buy you a bottle of Flinstone Complete Vitamins until you get to the dr. Are u still in school or just living w/parents? You are a grown woman now! they shouldn’t be too mad!

Prenatal vitamins are important. Atleast purchase the local drugstore’s brand of prenatal vitamins until you go to the doctor.

The vitamins are mostly important to YOUR body. Your baby will take from your body anything it needs even if it puts you at a deficit. What this means is that you are putting your TEETH and bones and your heart health on the line and over the course of your pregnancy you will do some damage. In the old days before prenatals they used to say you could expect to lose at least 1 tooth for every child and 1 inche after every child when you get old. Scary isn’t it? If you are afraid to take prenatals for being found out, at least take a one a day women’s supplement to help keep you up on what you need.

They help the baby out, but aren’t absolutely necessary. Some women don’t take them because they make them sick. Just continue to eat healthy and eat foods high in Folic Acid and Calcium.

the vitamins are soo important especally in early pregnancy, they help prevent certain defects
you can purchase prenatal vitamins from a store without a prescription and before you see a doctor
you need to tell your parents, the sooner you do it, the easier it will be. you will only stress yourself out more the longer you wait…. trust me telling your parents isn’t the end of the world, they will react better than you think
did you tell the baby’s father?
best of luck to you and your baby!!
email me if you have any questions or need help talking with your parents!

How far along are you? You need to go to the doctor and not just for the vitamins. You are 19 and you are your own guardian. If you are not on their insurance they wouldn’t even know. Besides, you are going to have to tell them eventually

Your baby will strip what she needs from your body, the prenates are really for YOU to remain healthy. Women who do not take prenates have a highly likelyhood for tooth and bone loss in their lifetime compared to their peers who have taken prenatal vitamins.

Any vitamins and minerals you take are not directly administered to the fetus but to keep you healthy in order to nourish the fetus. As long as you are eating the proper foods enriched with the proper vitamins especially folic acid then your fetus will most likely be fine. Prenatals are a safe guard to keep you healthy because your body now has to make enough for two.

Prenatal vitamins are really important. I used them religiously through out 2 of my pregnancies. The third time I didn’t because every kind the doctor tried made me sick. My third child was the smallest and lightest of the three. It may or may not have had anything to do with the vitamins but she has remained small her whole life. She is now 21 but looks like about 14 and still wears a childrens size 2 shoe. Like I said it may not have anything to do with it but I do recommend taking them. I would also go ahead and tell my parents if I were you. You can’t hide it forever and the longer you wait the angrier they will be. You are of legal age so whatever you do is your decision whether your parents agree or not.

They are very important!! You and your baby need the extra iron. Eating healthy is great for your baby, but you need the iron. When you are pregnant, all the good stuff goes to the baby and without the vitamin, you may not be getting enough nutrients for yourself. You may get them at Walmart. Hurry and get to the doctor though. Prenatal care is VERY important. Your parents don’t have to know you went. Good Luck!!

They’re *very* important. Especially for the prevention of spina bifida. If you go to the Easter Seals website you can read about the vitamins and spina bifida. If I were you I would high-tail it to the nearest grocery store and buy some prenatal vitamins off the shelf, just to tide you over until you can get some from the doctor. Think of it this way, if you don’t start taking the vitamins, and then God forbid something were to happen to your baby, you would always wonder if it was because you didn’t take the vitamins.
I know from personal experience. My baby has severe cerebral palsy and mental retardation. I did take the vitamins and did everything right. The doctors all tell me it was nothing I did that caused it. But I still wonder if it was that hot shower I took, or the fact that I ate too many Doritos, or something like that. They tell me I’m crazy - and I am being crazy - but if I *had* done something that I knew I wasn’t supposed to do, I would be forever blaming myself for my son’s condition.
So in this case it is definitely best to play it safe! Congratulations on your baby. I know you must be terrified especially if your parents are strict. Do you think that they would eventually calm down and help you out? I’ve heard of plenty of girls who were afraid to tell their parents, and then they told them and it ended up ok. It’s a scary time now, but in 5 years you’ll look at your child and be happy that you have him/her. I didn’t even really like kids before I had mine - and now I love them.
Good luck to you!! I’ll say a prayer for you right now.

hi u can really go buy some at the pharmacy… I hope you will get to talk and have a good experience.. I was wondering how far along? they are important but GOING IN for your exam is even more important… I hope that whatever restrictions your parents will be using on you wont be harmful to keep you from at least go in to a free clinic.. sit and spend a 2hrs calling from a payphone and find a free private clinic until u feel u can tell.. and plus its really fun u get to see and bond with your baby…

They are very important for your health. The baby will be fine consuming all of the nutrients from your body from just your diet. But mommy’s (thats you!
health will be at risk if you do not replace those nutrients.
For now, you should buy just a small bottle of over the counter prenatals to hold you over til you can see a doctor. Dont buy a big bottle… a small one should last you long enough til you can get a RX .
Please go see a doc hun, its VERY important for you and Baby’s health! If you are worried about your parents finding out before the timing is right, then go to a planned parenthood. They can be very helpful!

very important. especially folic acid, it can help prevent nural tube defects and spina bifida in the newborn. not just important to baby, but to you, too, because the baby is taking most of your nutrition. you can buy OTC vitamins and folic acid at your local pharmacy if you’re afraid to go see a doctor.

Just take regular vitamins. Prenatals are really ideal for later in pregnancy as lots of women need the additional iron to prevent anemia. But for now, at least take the regular vitamins every day. Regular vitamins include folate and if you are already past 6 weeks, extra folate isn’t actually going to prevent specific birth defects like spina bifida.
Be aware that everybody will recommend What to Expect when you are expecting and it is WAY OUT OF DATE! There are better books to choose for reading material.
Congratulations!!

prenatal vitamins are very important for baby’s health as well as yours; just be aware that the Walmart brand does not provide 100% of the calcium you need, so you’ll have to take calcium tablets or eat/drink enough dairy such as milk, cheese, yogurt, to get 1500 mg per day. I don’t even know if the Drs. are telling women these days what to eat. My daughter is pregnant with her first and she says the Dr. hasn’t said a thing about diet! I don’t think they mention that the store brands do not provide enough calcium. Get going on the vitamins and to a Dr.! God bless you your baby!
