When do I need to start taking vitamins before trying to get pregnant?

We are planning on trying to conceive in about 6 months, when should I take prenatal vitamins? My doc said wait until I am pregnant, but I’ve heard others say do it a few months before. Also is the women’s one-a-day vitamin good enough to take right now?

I would suggest a prenatal vitamin. I would say start taking it now so you are in the habit when you start trying. Also… taking it before conception is the best because it can be up to 6 weeks before you find out you are pregnant and your baby needs the folic acid to prevent some types of birth defects. Good luck

My doctor said itd be better if you take prenatal vitamins (folic acid in particular) months before planning to get pregnant.. so you might as well take them now.. i am.

Take them when your doctor says so, but you should start eating a healthier diet now. The better nutrients your eating the healthier your baby will be.

i would start taking something before you get pregnant especial folic acid. it is good for you and your body…then once you get pregnant it is already a very healthy environment for your baby.
good luck!

The One a Day is fine…but if you want, you can actually take prenatal vitamins beginnig about 2-3 months before attempting conception. Taking prenatal vitamins ensures that your body is recieving all of the nutrients needed to support a growing fetus. (Folic Acid is the most important one and there is a lot of it in prenatal vitamins)
I took them 3 months before conception with my last pregnancy, but unfortunately I miscarried…NOT BECAUSE OF THE VITAMINS THOUGH…I had concieved multiples (triplets) and my body rejected them for chromosoanl abnormalities. (though I am convinced that it was divine intervention because I already have 4 kids and would have gone crazy with three newborns!) But, when I told my OB that we wanted to try again…she told me to continue to take my prenatal vitamins. I did and am now 36 weeks along with one very healthy baby girl!
Good luck and Congratulations!

Doctor told me to start when I started trying, but it was okay to take one instead of two a day. (On the bottle it says for preg women take 2, others take one.) One advantage to taking them early: they make your hair and nails grow faster.
