Are there herbs than you can take to prevent allergies?

I am currently taking two medications for allergies - Singulair and Allegera. In the three months I’ve been on the medications I’ve had two respiratory infections. Several people have told me I’m over medicated and one person thinks the medicines are actually making me sick. Are there any herbs (or other non-medication options) that help with allergies. OH! And I don’t know what I’m allergic to, but it’s nothing seasonal.

    Hmmm…

Well, first of all, ALLERGIES and RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS are not necessarily synonymous, although allergies that are not well controlled CAN predispose someone to respiratory infections. We’ve seen plenty of these this season — even more so than typical.

For those who are telling you that you’re over medicated, I doubt these are medical professionals. I have a LOT of patients on Allegra and Singulair — because they work on DIFFERENT mechanisms. So that is an incorrect answer. Likewise, I doubt they are making you sick. You are certainly NOT getting respiratory infections BECAUSE of these medications either. Just simply unsupportable conjecture.

The problem with herbs is that there’s no research based evidence to them. I’m not suggesting they are harmful, but I don’t see there’s much advantage of putting something into your body that is completely unregulated and has ONLY anecdotal evidence to support using it.

Rethink this, and please see your medical provider before dropping these medications. They are really good medications, and VERY safe to use. You just may have had the unlucky experience of getting an infection like so many others. Like I said, it’s been a BAD season for these upper respiratory infections. Hope this helps.

Allergy is a chronic condition. It can be controlled but not cured. It is caused by a defect in the immune system. Your body is mis-identfying benign (harmless) proteins and enemy germ invaders. There is no herb in the world that is going to stop this! The key to controlling allergy is to identify what is the trigger and then avoid that trigger. For example, if you are allergic to dust mites (like I am) I keep a dust free bedroom, wash my sheets with De-Mite and the world is good. No allergic reactions. You will never get your allergies under control until you know what they are. That means a trip to an allergic or immunologist for testing. It is worth it! Once you have the knowledge of what causes the reaction, you can reduce your exposure. Just in case it is mites (like mine) I am sending two links. One on how to set up your bedroom and the other on the stuff for your sheets. Get rid of the trigger and then you don’t have to worry about no stinking medications!
